Suman called Misha in the bedroom and told to close the door. Suman’s eyes were swollen as if she had cried for hours. Misha felt the pain and moved forward to console her dearest aunt. She took her personal diary from suman’s hand and was about to hug when Suman, with all her force, slapped Misha right in her face and pushed so hard, enough to make her see the stars.
“When your parents died you were just 10 YO and we brought you home. We never thought of having our own children so that you won’t feel alone and left. He did so much for you. Do you have any idea what you have written in your personal diary? Haven’t you thought once before accusing your own uncle of sexual harassment…..it’s such a big word Misha…”
Suman went on and on for an hour where Misha was thinking to herself
“This is the reason I have never ever thought of telling someone except my diary, not even you …”
Already stressed, Misha started feeling dizzy so she thought of leaving the room. The moment she turned, Suman held her hand and pulled her in.
“Where are you going Misha I told you to close the door, I want to talk to you. As you can see this diary in my hand, you know what I want to talk about… “
Misha came into all her senses as suman came closer and made her sit on the bed.
” You know it’s been so many days I have been willing to talk to you as I felt you are being so lost all the time. I literally raided your room Misha, and I found this…your personal diary. Within a minute I came to know the reason of your behavior except one. I didn’t get why you didn’t talk to me Misha. Why would you think that I won’t understand? Why you didn’t tell me this before? …”
“I thought you will kick me out of your house and then where will I go? Why would someone want to believe such things about their closed ones? Specially husband…” Misha was whimpering.
Suman was awestruck by Misha’s explanation.
” Oh Misha, I am so sorry my child, I don’t know what I have done to make you feel in such a way but trust me, I am with you…”
Every word was taking Misha by surprise. She suspected once that this is going to come but never expected to come in this way.
“Now I want you to listen very carefully Misha, I have never ever thought in my life that this day would come and now that it has come unfortunately, I am going to take care of it no matter what it takes, but let me tell you one thing first, ITS NOT YOUR FAULT. I repeat it’s not your fault, Misha. I am glad that I decided to invade your personal space and come to know but it shouldn’t have happened this way. You should have told me this a the very first time and that’s what you are going to do from now onwards. Whatever happens, you are informing me right away. I can truly understand your trauma my child, I am so sorry I couldn’t protect you, Misha. I am feeling so ashamed…..”
“but it’s about your own husband….” Teary-eyed Misha interrupted innocently.
“Does that make this thing less disgraceful and less horrified?
I am a wife Misha but I am a woman first. If not me, then who will understand what trauma it might have caused you. I know exactly why you chose not to speak. It didn’t come to me as a surprise. But trust me, I am with you with all my heart. I love you more than ever. I am surely going to make it up to you but I just want to tell you one thing Misha…
Today I will support you but what about tomorrow? It’s not about just one person. You can’t just write it in your personal diary and let it go. You can’t and you shouldn’t. You must stand for yourself. You must speak up. Learn how to protect and defend yourself. World is not a decent place to live, Misha. Perpetrators are everywhere, you must learn to protect yourself. Reinforce boundaries and make sure to have everything what it takes to have them. Dont blame yourself and don’t you ever feel guilty as it’s not your fault. Learn to fight back. Shame doesn’t belong to you. “
Suman was talking fiercely where Misha was still in disbelief, but somehow she got the hold of her thoughts and asked Suman, “Why are you supporting me. I mean your marriage will be at stake”.
Suman held her hand tightly and said,
“Yes,I know but we are women Misha and that’s what real women do. They help and support each other when needed. They stand by each other no matter what. Like a Pillar!! I don’t know whats gonna happen next but I am here and will stand by you forever. You have my words! “
…and Misha rested her head on suman’s shoulder as she felt the storm has come to the rest a bit…
This women’s day I hope for the day where there won’t be any Misha and if she is there, I hope she finds her suman, who is ready to stand by her!! Let’s pledge and press for progress together!!
As the world celebrates the International Women’s day, a bunch of bloggers has come together to rejoice this spirit of womanhood with this blog train hosted by Neha from Sharing our experiences, Deepali from myteenytot and Anubhuti from criesnlaughter for the month of March.
I would like to thank Reetuparna for introducing me. She says she is absolutely not proud to be born as a woman but before you judge her, go through her amazing blog post here , to know what exactly she has to say.
I would further like to introduce Rupali from rupalidotcom , so hop on the train to read some amazing takes on womanhood.
